Body wraps are the hottest thing in the weight-loss world right now, i’m sure you’ve heard of them. There are before and after images all over the internet of the people who have tried this strategy to slim down. It makes you wonder…do they really work?
Body wraps used to be called herbal wraps and have been around for decades. They used to be done with linen sheets but are now conducted with plastic or thermal blankets. Every spa is different but the body wrap procedure is usually done on a massage table in a dark room lit by candles and accompanied by soft relaxing music.
Your skin is then exfoliated with a scrub and you are required to take a shower before the body wraps are applied. This allows for your skin to absorb more of the contents. Your entire body is wrapped with your arms at your sides for about 30 minutes. During that time you are covered by a thermal blanket to make you sweat during the entire process.
Moisturizing Wrap – used to moisturize the skin and is used with a variety of lotions and fragrances for a relaxing effect.
Detoxifying Wrap – uses more natural ingredients like seaweed or mud which pulls harmful toxins out of your skin.
Slimming Wrap – smaller pieces of material are wrapped tightly around the body for a slimming effect.
Cellulite Wrap – herbal remedies are used with the wrap to allegedly minimize the appearance of cellulite.
Whether or not body wraps help with weight-loss, depending on the type of wrap you decide on, there can be some added benefits. Body wraps can tighten your skin, eliminate toxins, relax your mind and body, and soothe overworked muscles. Make sure you do your research and read reviews before deciding on which treatment works best for your situation.
If your goal is solely to lose weight, forget it. If your goal is to treat yourself to a relaxing and moisturizing experience, than I am all for it if the procedure is done in a safe way that benefits your body.

The before and afters pictures of successful body wrap procedures are very much deceiving. Water loss causes tighter looking skin and a thinner physique but what you don’t know is that these pictures are taken immediately after the procedure. The results are temporary and last around 1-2 days.
Most of the companies who conduct the body wrap procedure say that you get the best results when accompanied by a healthy diet and exercise program. Sometimes you are required to workout while wearing the wrap. We all know that a healthy diet and exercise will result in long term weight-loss so why even use a body wrap if that is the result you are looking for?
Body wraps usually contain a large amount of fragrance and can irritate your skin, so make sure you look into the ingredients being used if you decide to try the procedure. Clay wraps are better to use on sensitive skin over fragrant oils. Wraps also contain herbals which can affect some drugs so if you are taking any medications, it’s best to get the go ahead from your doctor beforehand.
Depending on how the procedure is conducted, you may not want to partake if you are claustrophobic. Some wraps are wound around the entire body, like a mummy, arms included. You are unable to move for a significant amount of time.
The absolute worst thing that can come from using body wraps is the potential for severe dehydration and circulatory problems which can ultimately lead to Hypovolemic Shock.
According to Rachel Nall of Healthline.com, “Hypovolemic shock, also called hemorrhagic shock, is a life-threatening condition that results when you lose more than 20 percent (one-fifth) of your body’s blood or fluid supply. This severe fluid loss makes it impossible for the heart to pump sufficient blood to your body. Hypovolemic shock can cause many of your organs to fail. The condition requires immediate emergency medical attention in order to survive.”

In regards to using body wraps as a weight-loss tool, if you are looking for a quick fix that will last, you are searching for the impossible. Nothing will get you the body you want except a healthy diet along with regular exercise. The only thing you will lose long term is your money. Are the momentary inches lost worth possible serious medical issues?
